Crown moulding refers to any kind of moulding applied to a finished edge, usually where ceiling meets the tops of walls, or on tops of cabinets, cornices, pilasters. The effect of molding is a create a graceful, elegant shape. As a decorative transition point between wall and ceiling, crown moulding draws the eye upwards, creating length, while its continuous band unifies a room’s space and creates a an effect of richness.

Crown moulding comes in widths between 3 and 20 inches, with the most common widths hovering around 4 to 6 inches. The proper width of a crown moulding is determined by the dimensions of the room, in particular the ceiling height. Generally speaking, the larger the room, the wider the crown moulding should be.
